The central challenge: to take a very small space, and create an elegant living space and front entry without diminishing the power of the ancient Live Oak trees and surrounding native landscape. This was accomplished by very carefully crafting the components in the space, creating a geometry that contrasted with the natural contours of the trees, enhancing their beauty without competing with them. The simplicity of materials and design connect the landscape to the house. The dappled light through the trees washes shadows across the pavers and seat walls throughout the day. Kids and adults actively use the space and it is a pleasure to walk through to the front door.
